2025 at a glance
2025 marked the beginning of a new term for the governing bodies of .PT, in a particularly demanding context for the global digital ecosystem. At a time when technological evolution, increasing regulatory complexity and the current geopolitical landscape reinforce the importance of critical digital infrastructures, the role of .PT in managing and operating Portugal’s top-level domain is especially significant, contributing to the trust, security and resilience of the country’s digital ecosystem.
This new cycle begins with a strategic vision oriented toward the 2030 horizon, resulting from an in-depth reflection process on the organization’s positioning and future challenges. This reflection takes on particular significance in the current international context, where the digital sovereignty of Portugal and Europe is gaining increasing strategic importance, with a direct impact on the domain name industry and on Internet governance.
Throughout the year, .PT maintained its focus on its core business — the registration, management and maintenance of domain names — ensuring high standards of quality, security and resilience of the infrastructure supporting the .pt domain. At the same time, .PT continued to promote the development of the national digital ecosystem, strengthening its participation in national and international cooperation initiatives and supporting projects that contribute to digital capacity building and inclusion, with particular emphasis on the Ponto Digital Platform.
From the perspective of the core activity, 2025 showed a very positive evolution in domain registration dynamics. Over the course of the year, 162,465 new domain names were registered, representing a 12% increase compared to the same period in the previous year, reversing the slowdown trend observed in the prior period. In cumulative terms, the .pt zone surpassed the milestone of 2 million registered domains for the first time, reaching 2,089,683 names as of December 31.
This performance is particularly significant in the European context, where the average growth of ccTLDs continues to show a moderate pace. With a growth rate of 8.4%, .pt maintained a significant differential compared to the European average, highlighting the robustness of its dynamics and the relevance of the national domain in the Portuguese market.
From a financial perspective, the 2025 financial year shows very positive results, even reversing the trend observed in previous years. There was a significant increase in revenues associated with the organization’s core activity, reflecting the favorable evolution of domain name registrations and the sustainability of .PT’s management model. Total income for the year amounted to €4,309,060, with net profit for the period reaching €64,253.
.PT also continued to strengthen its presence and participation in the main international forums dedicated to Internet governance and domain name management, such as CENTR, ICANN and IGF, and actively contributed to the reflection and development of policies that shape the global digital ecosystem. In this context, .PT maintained a relevant role in international organizations and initiatives, as well as in cooperation with peer entities.
Strengthening relations with Portuguese-speaking countries also took on particular importance, through LusNIC, promoting the sharing of knowledge, best practices and experiences in the management of critical Internet infrastructures and digital governance. This cooperative work contributes to strengthen the Lusophone community in the digital space and to affirm .PT’s role as an active partner in promoting a more secure, resilient and inclusive Internet in the Portuguese language.
Throughout 2025, .PT strengthened its presence and participation in various leading events within the digital, technological and academic ecosystem, contributing to reflection and knowledge sharing on the challenges of the Internet and digital transformation. Among the most notable moments were its participation in the APDC Digital Business Congress, the Portugal Digital Summit, EVOLVE – Digital Transformation Summit, Encontro Ciência 2025 and the FCCN Conference, as well as in conferences and meetings dedicated to innovation and the digital future, such as What’s Next 2025, Innovate Tech 2025, the Dialogue on a Luso-Brazilian Agenda for Artificial Intelligence, and the Great Conference on Business Sustainability. .PT also took part in initiatives aimed at academic and technological communities, such as SINFO 32, JEEC 25 and re_B00TCMP.PT, as well as in events dedicated to Internet governance, including the Portuguese Initiative on Internet Governance and the Lusophone Internet Governance Forum. In the area of digital capacity building and the promotion of skills among younger generations, initiatives such as Apps for Good and Sitestar.pt also stood out, along with programs and events promoting STEM fields and digital inclusion.
.PT also strengthened its commitment in the promotion of gender equality in the technology and digital sector, supporting and participating in initiatives aimed at encouraging the participation of women and girls in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). In this context, its involvement in initiatives such as Girls in ICT Day, the Engenheiras por 1 Dia program and other awareness and capacity-building actions targeting younger generations stood out, fostering engagement with career opportunities in the technology sector. Through these initiatives, .PT contributed to valuing diversity and inclusion within the digital ecosystem, reaffirming its commitment to build a more representative, equitable and accessible Internet for everyone.
By investing in digital capacity building, promoting technological skills and encouraging the participation of diverse audiences, including young people and women in STEM field, the organization contributes to strengthen the national digital ecosystem and to build a society better prepared for the challenges of digital transformation. This commitment reflects .PT’s vision as an entity that, beyond managing Portugal’s top-level domain, also seeks to generate a positive impact on the community and contribute to the country’s sustainable development within the context of the digital economy.
The results achieved throughout 2025 would not have been possible without the contribution and dedication of .PT team. The talent, professionalism and commitment of the team continue to be one of the organization’s main success factors, ensuring high standards of quality, security and trust in the management of Portugal’s top-level domain. We would also like to acknowledge the members of .PT for their support and trust in the development of the organization’s mission, as well as all institutional partners and the digital community who, through collaboration and knowledge sharing, contribute to strengthen the national digital ecosystem and to reinforce .PT’s position as a leader within this ecosystem.
